Drogheda Boyne River Clean Up

The Drogheda Boyne River Clean Up was a massive success today due to all the amazing volunteers who turned up this morning.

We believe we had close to 65 volunteers out today which certainly shows that community spirit is alive and well in Drogheda. This may be one of the biggest groups we’ve had yet for one of our clean ups!

Its true when they say many hands make light work.

A massive thank you to every single volunteer who gave their time, Sanctuary Runners Termonfeckin who are always smiling, our friends Boyne Fishermans Rescue and Recovery, & Drogheda new arrivals.

Thank you to Ejiro Ohare, James Byrne and Elaine McGinty for your continued support as always.

A special thank you to Drogheda & District AC members who showed up in droves this morning. It would not have been possible without the support of Drogheda & District and we thank you for that.

During the clean-up, we made sure to separate the litter we collected into different categories. We separated plastic, glass, and other recyclable materials. This was important to ensure that we didn’t simply move the pollution from one area to another, but rather that we were making a meaningful impact on the health of the river.

Let’s continue to work together and make a positive impact. Remember, even small actions can have a big impact. Keeping our community clean and green!

“If you want to go quickly, go alone. If you want to go far, go together.”

Get Colouring with Drogheda Tidy Towns (Competition)

In 2022, Drogheda Tidy Towns were excited to launch Drogheda Tidy Towns colouring pages with local parents, teachers, and schools.

To expand on this initiative, Drogheda Tidy Towns connected with eight schools and coordinated a colouring competition. Each school and class ran the competition, encouraging children to colour in the provided pages and submit their work.

The competition was a huge success, with many enthusiastic participants showcasing their creativity and skill. In the end, a winner from each school was selected and we presented them with their special ceremony in council office Fair Street, May 2023. The students, their families, and teachers really enjoyed the experience.

Drogheda Tidy Towns hope that these colouring pages are fun, create awareness in the home, classroom and encourage conversations around sustainability, biodiversity, litter in our historic town, and how small changes can have a massive impact on the planet.

All colouring pages are downloadable for home or the room. click here to download

Congratulations to all the amazing winners and we hope you are so proud of your fantastic artwork! And a massive thank you to all the students, teachers, and especially Niamh Redden, co-ordinator for helping make the colouring competition a massive success.

Supermarket Trolleys Dumped into River Boyne, Drogheda

On Monday, Boyne Fishermans Rescue and Recovery and Kevin Callan took action to address the persistent problem of shopping trolleys being dumped into the River Boyne.

Firstly, well done to the Boyne Fishermans Rescue and Recovery and Kevin Callan for removing 30 Trolleys from the River Boyne. You all did amazing work and the Drogheda community are so lucky to have such a fantastic organisation in our community.

If you are a Drogheda Local or visit Drogheda regularly you will be very familiar with seeing trolleys just dumped into the River Boyne. When the river level is low it is easier to see the trolleys that get trapped in the muck along the riverbank. Unfortunately it has become a common sight to see shopping trolleys dumped into the river Boyne where it is most visible along the boardwalk at the Dominic’s Park.

These abandoned shopping trolleys in the river Boyne provide a disturbing image of the disdain some people have for the environment and lack of pride for our town.

The effects of this dumping are numerous:

  • First of all, shopping trolleys restrict fish and other aquatic animals by acting as physical barriers that block the flow of water.
  • The metal from these trolleys may corrode, contaminating the water and bringing dangerous compounds to the aquatic environment
  • The chemicals and rust that the abandoned trolleys release into the river can have a negative impact on the water’s quality, putting not only fish but also other species that depend on the river for food in jeopardy.
  • These dumped trolleys have a negative visual impression.
  • Shopping Trolley presence lessens the natural beauty of the River Boyne in Drogheda.

It is imperative to deal with the underlying roots of this problem. Supermarkets need to be more accountable for their shopping trolleys. They may be kept out of rivers far more frequently by enacting tougher prevention procedures and making sure their trolleys are properly retrieved and maintained.

The problem of shopping trolleys being dumped in rivers all around Ireland serves as a sobering reminder that what we do has far-reaching effects. We can defeat this environmental menace and guarantee the long-term health and beauty of our rivers by banding together, from individuals to corporations to governments. Let’s protect Ireland’s natural wonders by exercising responsibility rather than carelessness.

Thanks again to the Boyne Fishermans Rescue and Recovery and Kevin!

Ireland’s new Deposit Return Scheme

Did you know that Ireland will be introducing a Deposit Return Scheme Early 2024 to increase recycling rates of single-use PET plastic and metal beverage containers? This will help reduce litter, boost the recycling sector, create jobs and help us meet EU targets.

In February 2024, when you buy a drink in a plastic bottle, aluminium or steel can that features the Re-turn logo, you pay a small deposit in addition to the price of the drink. When you return your empty, undamaged container to any retail outlet, you get your deposit back in full.

We are calling on each and every one of you to join our campaign to keep Drogheda Litter Free. Let’s work together to recycle, reuse and repurpose, and do our part in creating a cleaner and more sustainable community.

Bring It, Bin It! Help to keep our town clean and litter-free.

Attention Drogheda community! We need your help to keep our town clean and litter-free.

Over the past few months, Drogheda Tidy Towns has noticed a significant increase in littering of plastic bottles, cans, and glass bottles. This is not just unsightly, but also harmful to our environment.

During the clean-ups and litter picks, we made sure when possible to separate the litter we collected into different categories. We separate plastic, glass, and other recyclable materials. This was important to ensure that we didn’t simply move the pollution from one area to another, but rather that we were making a meaningful impact on the health of the river.

We are calling on each and every one of you to join our campaign to keep Drogheda Litter Free. Let’s work together to recycle, reuse and repurpose, and do our part in creating a cleaner and more sustainable community.
