Drogheda Tidy Towns ‘Adopt An Area’ campaign is a community-led initiative that aims to make Drogheda a cleaner, greener, and more beautiful place to live, work, and visit. We have been working tirelessly for years to promote environmental awareness, improve the town’s appearance, and enhance its biodiversity. One of the most successful initiatives of Drogheda Tidy Towns is the ‘Adopting An Area’ program, which has been gaining momentum in recent years.
As of now, Drogheda Tidy Towns has 32 adopted areas in the town. These areas are looked after by volunteers who clean up litter, maintain flower beds, paint walls, and tidy up green areas regularly.
We hope to double this number by the end of 2023. To achieve this ambitious goal, Drogheda Tidy Towns is inviting all members of the community, including businesses, schools, companies, and community organizations, to consider adopting a public area and participating in the initiative.
The ‘Adopting An Area‘ program is an excellent opportunity for individuals and groups to take ownership of a particular public area and contribute to the town’s overall cleanliness and appearance. Volunteers can choose an area that they feel passionate about, such as a park, street, or community and take care of it by collecting litter, planting flowers, and maintaining the space. By doing so, you will not only improve the area’s appearance but also foster a sense of community pride and responsibility.
We believe that by encouraging more people to adopt an area, we can achieve its goal of making Drogheda a cleaner and more beautiful place to live.
The ‘Adopting An Area’ program is a crucial part of this initiative, and the group hopes to double the number of adopted areas by the end of 2023 and we can only do this by inviting more members of the community to participate in Adopt An Area!
Drogheda Tidy Towns hopes to make Drogheda an even better place to live, work, and visit. So, let’s join hands and adopt an area to help make our community a better place for all of us.

The Drogheda Tidy Towns community went out over the bank holiday weekend to clean up the lower part of Dublin Road. We also had residents from the Dublin Road out doing clean-ups over the bank holiday weekend.
A lot of ground was covered from the top of Poorhouse Lane to the start of St.Mary’s Hill. Take a look at the before and after pictures below!
A big well done to Denise who was also out Monday cleaning around the wall area outside Flogas.
What will happen next?
We hope to add some planters next to the stonewall in the below pictures which is just before you turn left to St.Mary’s Hill.
We also hope to give the streetlights a new coat of paint (vibrant red) and bring the area back to looking its best.

This is the first installment of Drogheda Tidy Towns Out And About, in which we meet and greet locals throughout the Drogheda community. We want to be able to highlight all of the fantastic work that local businesses and residents are doing to help elevate Drogheda and make it a better place for us all to live and work.
To mention a few, we’ll be speaking with local residents, businesses owners, house owners, sports clubs, gyms, community groups, resident associations, and schools.
We stopped by Barlow’s Railway Tavern for our inaugural Drogheda Tidy Towns Out And About and chatted with Barlow himself (Railway Tavern proprietor). It was excellent timing because Barlow was out sweeping the footpath in front of the pub and surrounding area. We noticed some landscaping work that was carried out in front of the pub over the last 2 weeks and it is looking fantastic. We asked Barlow to tell us all about it and how the came to happen.
Barlow told us that they wanted to improve the look and feel of the area around the bar, so he took it upon himself to begin improving the area, which has encouraged and inspired other local businesses and individuals to do the same and start making plans.
“Barlow’s Railway Tavern is located on Dublin Road, just a few hundred meters from Drogheda MacBride Train Station, where tourists arrive and depart on a daily basis. Tourists’ perceptions of our magnificent town are heavily influenced by first and last impressions.”

To achieve the above and to assure the greatest outcomes and a high finish, Barlow noted that some ground preparation was done to enhance the longevity of the newly laid turf grass. They added some beautiful hedges after it was laid, which will develop and mature over time. They also put up a small border fence in front of the freshly laid turf grass to keep people off the grass so it could settle and root.
Barlow’s work has significantly improved the area’s aesthetic and deserves a big thumbs up. Check it out for yourself! Stop by Barlow’s Railway Tavern, take a seat inside or outdoors, get a pint or one of their numerous Irish and international whiskeys and gins, and relax, savor, and enjoy while soaking up the ambience of a typical Irish bar.
Follow on Social Media for updates, events and what not to miss at Barlow’s Railway Tavern
“At Barlow’s we pride ourselves on being a very welcoming and warm establishment, offering Drogheda’s largest selection of Whiskey’s, Gins and live music”

For many Drogheda folk The Alley was the playground of our youth and it is such a shame to see it allowed to slide into such degradation.

Following a request for assistance from John ‘Kellogs’ Kelly the aim is to REOPEN THE ALLEY.
To set the wheels in motion, the plan is to get ALL the pals from the past to gather at The Alley Saturday June 18th at 2PM and with your assistance start a movement to pursue the outlined aim. It will be a brilliant opportunity to meet new and old friends from yesteryear. Everyone is welcome to The Alley for a photo shoot and we will take it from there.
Meeting: The Alley
Date: Saturday 18 June

Located at the eastern gable of the former Officer’s Mess/ Canteen, which now forms part of Millmount Museum; unusual in the sense that, it was erected during the 19th century within a British Army Barracks, when Handball Alleys were, at this time, being erected by members of the United Irish Leagues and the founding members of the G.A.A. The soldiers that were stationed at Millmount included that of the Leinster, Wexford and Monaghan Regiments.
The game of handball however, dates back to a much earlier period than the 1870s or 80s and when the G.A.A. was founded in 1884 the rules governing the game of
handball did not allow for members of the Crown Forces to participate, which
resulted in many handball alleys being constructed within the walls of military and police barracks.
It is a great pleasure that on behalf of the people of Drogheda we have submitted our entry for the 2022 SuperValu Tidy Towns Competition.

What a fantastic year for all in the Drogheda community and for all the volunteers and partners who tirelessly elevate Drogheda and help make our beautiful and historic town a better place for us all to live.
The Drogheda community continues to show great commitment, passion, community and strength and this allows us to have a vibrant, sustainable and inclusive community in Drogheda.
A shout out to all the TidyTowns groups in Ireland. Congrats on a fantastic year. Drogheda Tidy Towns have learnt a lot from you all by sharing all the work our communities do and encouraging each other to be creative and inclusive.
A big shout to all the TidyTowns groups in Co.Louth.

World Bee Day 2022 is on Friday, 20th May 2022. Bee Day celebrations raise awareness about the threats to pollinators like bees by human activities. In December 2017, the United Nations ( UN) approved this day and the First World Bee Day was celebrated on Sunday, 20 May 2018. In the current year 2022, the fifth observance of this special day is taking place.

The purpose of World Bee Day is to acknowledge the role of bees and other pollinators for the ecosystem.
World Bee Day theme 2022 is “Bee engaged: Build Back Better for Bees”
By this theme, The United Nations focused on the threats of protection posed by COVID-19 to bees and other pollinators.UN also urged upon bee-keeping awareness and the importance of bee-derived products. This Theme of Bee Day 2022 provides a direction for all the celebrations of World Bee Day 2022.
The food and agriculture organization of the United Nations FAO will organize a virtual event on 20 May 2022.
Did you know:
1.Though bees have jointed legs, they do not possess anything like a kneecap, and therefore do not have knees.
2. Honey has antiseptic properties and was historically used as a dressing for wounds and a first aid treatment for burns and cuts.
3. The natural fruit sugars in honey – fructose and glucose – are quickly digested by the body. This is why sportsmen and athletes use honey to give them a natural energy boost.
4. The practice of beekeeping dates back at least 4,500 years.
5. Bees must gather nectar from two million flowers to make one pound of honey
6. One bee has to fly about 90,000 miles – three times around the globe – to make one pound of honey.
7. The average bee will make only 1/12th of a teaspoon of honey in its lifetime.
8. A honey bee visits 50 to 100 flowers during a collection trip.
9. A honey bee can fly for up to six miles, and as fast as 15 miles per hour.
10. Bees communicate by dancing.
