The National Tidy Towns Programme is Ireland’s longestrunning community and environmental initiative. Established in 1958 and administered by the Department of Rural and Community Development, it encourages towns and villages to work together to enhance their local environment, protect biodiversity, and strengthen community pride. Sponsored by SuperValu, the programme now involves hundreds of communities nationwide.
For Drogheda, Tidy Towns provides a national framework that supports the work carried out locally by volunteers, residents, schools, businesses, and community organisations.
Each year, Drogheda Tidy Towns prepares and submits the official Tidy Towns entry on behalf of the entire town.
This submission reflects the combined efforts of:
Our annual submission is a celebration of Drogheda’s achievements. It recognises the dedication, creativity, and hard work shown across the town, from large community projects to the everyday efforts of individuals who help keep Drogheda clean, green, and welcoming.
After the submission, Drogheda is visited by independent adjudicators during the summer months.
Their visit is:
They walk the town as any visitor would, observing the results of the community’s work exactly as it appears on the day.
Following their visit, adjudicators prepare a detailed report, which is made available for the public on www.tidytowns.ie for
Drogheda, as well as every other applicant town in Ireland. This report outlines Drogheda’s strengths and offers constructive suggestions for future improvement.
These reports are extremely useful, and we encourage everyone to read them as they offer insights into what the judges see, what they value, and where they see we can continue to improve.
Drogheda’s involvement in Tidy Towns provides a helpful structure for identifying and planning local work and improvements, caring for public spaces, supporting biodiversity, and encouraging responsible environmental practices.
It also brings together the efforts of many groups and individuals who all contribute to making Drogheda a cleaner, greener, and more attractive place
to live.
Drogheda first entered the National Tidy Towns Competition in 2007. Since then, the town has made steady, determined progress – year after year – thanks to the commitment of volunteers, residents, schools, businesses, and partner organisations. Drogheda is proud to have achieved and retained a Gold Medal for 18 years, one of the highest honours in the competition. What a Gold Medal Means: A Gold Medal is awarded only to towns that reach the very top tier of scoring nationally. It recognises:
A Gold Medal is not guaranteed. It must be earned again every year, and it is only awarded if the town continues to improve, innovate, and build on previous achievements. Drogheda’s ability to retain Gold reflects the town’s collective effort and its ongoing ambition to keep raising standards.
